01. VTC Port

Cars are stored at the port's Vehicle Transit Centre (VTC) before the ship arrives. A fenced and guarded area.

02. Loading

Professional drivers (stevedores) drive the cars into the ship's hold via a special 'ramp'.

03. Unloading

At the destination, cars are driven out and placed in the port yard for handover to the owner.

What Is a RoRo Ship?

RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) ships are purpose-built for vehicles: cars are driven straight on board via a ramp, securely lashed on deck, and driven off again at the destination port — no cranes, no containers. That is why it is the most popular, fastest and most economical way to ship a car between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.

What are the RoRo shipping routes in Malaysia?

The main lanes run from Port Klang (Northport & Westport) to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah and Kuching, Sarawak — including via Bintulu — plus the return lanes from Sabah/Sarawak back to Port Klang.

How much does RoRo car shipping cost?

From RM1,950 for a sedan (Port Klang → Kuching) and RM2,195 (Port Klang → Kota Kinabalu). Full price lists live on each destination page; marine insurance is mandatory and priced separately.

When do RoRo ships depart?

Sailing schedules change with the shipping lines and season — check our Ship Schedule page, updated automatically from the carriers' official schedules.

Is RoRo car shipping safe?

RoRo is the industry-standard method for vehicles: cars are securely lashed on deck and handled by trained drivers at both ports. Mandatory marine insurance covers the voyage.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MARINE INSURANCE

Marine Insurance is a protection plan that covers your vehicle against the risk of loss during sea transport. The insurance price is determined based on the vehicle's current market value.

Covered Risks (Total Loss):

  • Fire and explosion.
  • The ship running aground, stranding, sinking or capsizing.
  • The vehicle overturning or skidding during the journey.
  • Collision of the ship with external objects.
  • Jettison (discarding cargo during an emergency).

Important Reminder:

Standard Marine Insurance usually only covers the vehicle in the event of a total loss caused by a major accident during the voyage period only.

WARNING: Scratches, dents, breakage, personal belongings and vehicle accessories are NOT covered by basic marine insurance.

For additional coverage (All-Risk), please consult our officer for an additional premium quote.
